AFC Wimbledon, commonly known as The Dons, is an English professional football club based in Wimbledon, London. The club was formed in 2002 as a fan-owned team after the original Wimbledon Football Club moved out of the area to become Milton Keynes Dons.

Despite being a relatively new club, AFC Wimbledon has achieved significant success over the years. In its first season (2002-03), the team won both the Combined Counties League Premier Division and the Surrey Senior Cup. Since then, they have gone on to win several other titles and promotions. In 2011, they earned promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history, reaching League One by 2016.

One of the unique things about AFC Wimbledon is that it is owned and run by the fans through the AFC Wimbledon Supporters' Trust. This means that supporters have a direct say in how the club is operated and what direction it takes, ensuring a strong community connection and forging a sense of collective identity among both players and fans.

Another characteristic that sets AFC Wimbledon apart from other clubs is the story behind its formation. When the original Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes, many fans felt betrayed and decided to start their own team. Supporters raised funds and secured an initial playing venue at Kingstonian FC's Kingsmeadow ground before moving to their current home, the Cherry Red Records Stadium, in 2020.

AFC Wimbledon has had some notable results against higher-ranked opponents in the Football League, including a victory over West Ham United in the FA Cup in 2019. They have also developed famous rivalries with clubs such as MK Dons, since the latter’s move to Buckinghamshire.

Overall, AFC Wimbledon is living proof that success doesn't always come down to money or resources. The club has shown that passion and community spirit, when combined with hard work and dedication, can overcome seemingly impossible obstacles. As The Dons enter a new era in their new stadium, which will be financed fully by the supporters’, it is worth watching and supporting how they continue to develop this unique, supporter-owned club in professional football.
