The National Hockey League (NHL) celebrated its 100th anniversary during the 2017-18 season. As part of the celebrations, the league created the NHL 100, a list of the top 100 players in league history. The list was unveiled on January 27, 2017, during the NHL All-Star festivities in Los Angeles.

The NHL 100 included players from all eras of the league, from pioneers such as Eddie Shore and Howie Morenz to modern-day stars such as Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid. Players were selected based on their statistical accomplishments, playoff success, individual awards, and overall impact on the game.

One thing that stood out about the NHL 100 was the dominance of Canadian-born players on the list. Of the 100 players, 70 were born in Canada. This is not surprising given that hockey is Canada's national sport and the country has produced many of the game's greatest players.

Some notable Canadian players on the NHL 100 include Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, and Maurice "Rocket" Richard. These players are widely considered among the best to ever play the game and have left an indelible mark on hockey history.

However, the NHL 100 also recognized the contributions of players from other countries. For example, Swedish defenseman Borje Salming made the list, as did Czech Republic forward Jaromir Jagr. Both players had successful careers in North America despite coming from non-traditional hockey nations.

In addition to recognizing individual players, the NHL 100 was also a celebration of the league itself. Over the course of its history, the NHL has endured many challenges, including labor disputes, financial difficulties, and tragedies such as the 1970 plane crash that killed members of the Chicago Blackhawks. Nevertheless, the league has persevered and grown into one of the major professional sports leagues in North America.

The NHL 100 was a chance to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look towards the future of the game. As the league begins its second century of existence, there will undoubtedly be new stars and new legends that emerge. But the NHL 100 provides a glimpse into the rich history and tradition of hockey that will continue to inspire players and fans alike for years to come.
