One standout piece was "On the Edge," choreographed by Adam Barruch. The piece featured six dancers performing intricate movements reminiscent of Bob Fosse's iconic style. The music, a remix of "Wilkommen" from Cabaret, added to the Broadway feel of the piece.
Another highlight was "The New 45," choreographed by Christine Spizzo. This high-energy piece had a vaudeville feel with dancers showcasing tap, jazz, and burlesque-inspired movement. The use of props, like top hats and canes, added to the vintage aesthetic.
"Until We Meet Again," choreographed by Joshua Manculich, used the song "With You" from the musical Ghost. The contemporary ballet piece explored grief and loss with poignant partnering and emotional solos.
Overall, NuWORKS 2017 showcased a diverse range of styles and themes within the dance world, many of which drew inspiration from Broadway shows. Whether it was a nod to classic musicals or a contemporary interpretation of their themes, the connection between Broadway and the dance world was evident throughout the program.
