Although best known for his incredible photography and exploration of the natural world as a National Geographic photographer, Paul Nicklen has also made a significant impact on the theater world.

Nicklen's relationship with theater began in 2009 when he collaborated with the Canadian playwright and actor, Robert Lepage. Together they created a performance called Cirque du Soleil’s "Ovo." Nicklen was brought in as an artist-in-residence to provide the production team with inspiration and visuals for the show, which was based around insects and their intricate ecosystems.

Nicklen's photographs became the basis for the set design of the show, which featured oversized insect puppets and costumes. The images provided inspiration for the colorful and fantastical world that Cirque du Soleil is known for, helping to create a truly immersive experience for the audience.

Nicklen's collaboration with Lepage did not stop at "Ovo." He provided the stunning visual projections for Lepage's latest work, "887," which premiered in 2015. The play centers around Lepage's childhood memories and examines how these memories shape our personal histories.

Nicklen was tasked with creating a series of images and animations that would reflect the themes of the play. He drew from his personal experiences exploring the Arctic and Antarctic regions to create hauntingly beautiful projections that captured the essence of ice and snow, while also conveying the emotional weight of the play's subject matter.

Through his collaborations with Lepage, Nicklen has bridged the gap between the worlds of nature photography and theater. His ability to use his camera to capture the essence of the natural world has translated seamlessly onto the stage, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature through the lens of theater.

In addition to his work in theater, Nicklen is also a passionate advocate for conservation efforts and is actively involved in using his photography to raise awareness about environmental issues. Through his various endeavors, Nicklen has proven himself to be a true innovator and visionary in his field. Whether through his stunning photographs or his collaborations with playwrights and directors, Paul Nicklen continues to push the boundaries of what we expect from the worlds of art and nature.
