Born in Belfast in 1992, Burnett began his amateur career at the age of eleven. He gained valuable experience and impressive results in the Irish amateur boxing scene before turning professional in 2013.
His early professional career saw him climb the ranks, winning regional titles and gradually making his way up to international level. With an impressive record of 17 wins, 1 loss and 9 knockouts, Burnett proved himself as a rising talent in the sport.
In 2017, he took on Lee Haskins for the IBF bantamweight title and secured a unanimous decision victory, claiming his first world championship belt. Just six months later, he faced Zhanat Zhakiyanov and added the WBA (Super) title to his collection, becoming Northern Ireland’s first unified world champion since Carl Frampton.
However, in November 2018, Burnett was forced to retire from his fight against Nonito Donaire due to a back injury sustained in the middle of the fourth round. He ultimately vacated his titles and took some time off to recover.
Despite this setback, Burnett remains a highly-respected figure in the boxing world. His strength, speed, and agility inside the ring have earned him praise from fans and fellow fighters alike. He has also become known for his humble personality outside of the ring, often speaking about his gratitude for his family and the opportunities he has been given.
Although he has not competed professionally since his injury, Burnett has not ruled out a return to boxing, and his loyal fanbase await his comeback with excitement.
