World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) was a mixed martial arts (MMA) organization that operated from 2001 to 2010. It was one of the leading promotions for lighter weight classes, featuring fighters in divisions such as featherweight, bantamweight and lightweight.

Many of today's top MMA fighters got their start in WEC, including former UFC champions Jose Aldo, Dominick Cruz and Anthony Pettis. The promotion also had a reputation for showcasing exciting fights with a fast-paced style that emphasized striking and submissions.

One of WEC's key contributions to the sport of MMA was its emphasis on the lighter weight classes. At the time, many fans and promoters believed that only larger, heavier fighters could draw a crowd and generate revenue. But WEC proved that smaller fighters could be just as popular and entertaining, paving the way for future organizations like ONE Championship and RIZIN to showcase fighters across a range of weight classes.

Another distinctive feature of WEC was its use of the cage rather than the traditional boxing ring for fights. This allowed for more dynamic and technical ground fighting, as well as preventing fighters from being able to escape or clinch excessively.

In 2006, WEC partnered with cable network Versus (now NBCSN) to begin broadcasting events on national television. This gave the promotion increased exposure and helped it reach a wider audience. However, after the UFC purchased WEC in 2010, the promotion was absorbed into the UFC and most of its fighters were subsequently signed to UFC contracts.

Despite its relatively short lifespan, WEC had a significant impact on the sport of MMA. Its focus on lighter weight classes and dynamic fighting styles paved the way for future MMA organizations and helped redefine what was possible within the sport. Many of its former fighters continue to compete at the highest levels of the sport, demonstrating the lasting legacy of this groundbreaking promotion.
