The 2nd Annual St. Louis Open Black Rodeo, held on September 11th at the Chaifetz Arena, showcased the talents of African American cowboys and cowgirls who are often overlooked in the predominantly white world of rodeo.

Rodeo has a long history in America, dating back to the late 1800s when cowboys started competing against each other in various ranch activities. Today, rodeos are still popular across the country, featuring events like bull riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, and team roping.

However, the image of the typical cowboy has remained overwhelmingly white, even though African Americans played a significant role in the development of the sport. In fact, many rodeos during the late 19th and early 20th centuries were racially integrated, with black and white cowboys competing side by side.

But as Jim Crow laws enforced segregation and racism against African Americans, they were increasingly excluded from participating in rodeos. Today, only a small percentage of professional rodeo competitors are black.

The St. Louis Open Black Rodeo aims to change that narrative, giving black cowboys and cowgirls a platform to showcase their skills and celebrate their heritage. The event featured several traditional rodeo events, including calf roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding, all performed by black riders.

In addition to the competitions, the rodeo included cultural elements such as a parade showcasing different African American organizations, live music, and vendors selling food and crafts.

The event was organized by Cleo Williams Jr., a retired firefighter and lifelong rodeo enthusiast who saw a need for more representation of black cowboys and cowgirls in the sport. Williams hopes to create more opportunities for black rodeo riders and inspire future generations to take up the sport.

The St. Louis Open Black Rodeo is just one example of efforts to make rodeo more inclusive and diverse. Organizations like the National Black Rodeo Association and the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo have also been working to promote black cowboys and cowgirls in the world of rodeo.

As rodeo continues to evolve, it's important to remember the contributions of all participants, regardless of their race or gender. By celebrating the talents of black riders, events like the St. Louis Open Black Rodeo are helping to rewrite the history of rodeo and create a more inclusive future for the sport.
