The National Invitation Tournament, better known as the NIT, is an annual postseason college basketball tournament that brings in 32 college basketball teams from across the nation to compete for a national title. The tournament is held during March and adds to the excitement of the famous March Madness college basketball tournament.

The NIT has been held annually since 1938, except in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II. Naturally, the number of participating teams had fluctuated over the years, ranging from four to 48 teams in different years, before settling on the current format in 2002.

Over the last few decades, the NIT has become a highly regarded tournament, adding to the prestige of any team that takes home the trophy. Winning the NIT can sometimes mean almost as much as winning one of the other major tournaments such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship since it signifies that your team is in elite company.

Some players who have started their careers in the NIT have gone on to have incredible success in the NBA league, including Larry Brown, Earl Monroe, and Shaquille O'Neal, who all played in the NIT before going pro.

The official selection process of the NIT includes a set of criteria that are used for picking the participants. These include factors such as how strong the team's schedule was during the regular season, win-loss record, and general performance throughout the season.

In the current system, the first four teams that do not gain a spot in the NCAA tournament receive an automatic bid to the NIT. This guarantees that some of the best teams left out of the NCAA tourney have a chance to shine in this secondary event.

The NIT may not always have the same aura around it as the prestigious NCAA and its Final Four, but the level of competition is still very high. Every year, fans tune in to watch their favorite college basketball teams compete for a chance to be the champions of the NIT, earning bragging rights that last until the following season.
