ASA Racing, or the American Speed Association, was a stock car racing series that ran from 1968 to 2013. It was known for close, competitive racing where drivers of all skill levels could compete against one another. The series gained a significant following across the country and produced many notable race winners who went on to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Auto racing is an umbrella term for different racing disciplines that use motorized vehicles, including open-wheel racing, sports car racing, drag racing, rally racing, and more. ASA Racing was primarily a stock car racing series, which means using production model cars (in this case, American-made) with a standardized set of rules for safety and competition.

Stock car racing has its roots in the Prohibition Era in America when bootleggers raced modified cars to outrun authorities. After Prohibition, these races evolved into proper stock car racing competitions. ASA Racing followed the traditional approach of making racing machines out of pre-existing models rather than create bespoke race cars. This created a fan base of people who drove the same kinds of cars as the ones they saw on the track.

ASA Racing's main drawcards were the parity among teams thanks to a limited tire rule and aerodynamic restrictions, thus allowing drivers of all skill levels to participate competitively. The series was a stepping stone for up-and-coming racers and a refuge for veteran pilots no longer able to compete at higher-level racing or wanting a chance to succeed again after setbacks.

Over the years, ASA Racing hosted several categories such as Late Model, Modified, and national touring trucks. The series had a strong following in the Midwest, especially in places such as Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Some of the most successful ASA Racing champions include Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Jimmie Johnson, and Alan Kulwicki. Many established drivers used their ASA Racing success as a launching pad for bigger things. With help from supporters, such as the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company's support of Kulwicki, ASA saw some of its most notable success stories become legends beyond the association.

However, despite the successes, in recent times, The ASA National Tour experienced difficulty in getting solid entry numbers for certain events and increasing notable absentees from the field. Eventually, it came to the point where ASA Racing couldn't survive without reliable support from corporate sponsors. Thus, ending ASA Racing's days of actual competition.

In conclusion, ASA racing played a significant role in American motor-sport history due to the amount of talent and entertainment it supplied to countless racing enthusiasts. It served as a launch pad for many drivers who went on to compete in NASCAR and other major racing circuits. Although the organization is no longer "alive" all one can say is that its legacy continues thanks to those who remember and honor the sport.
