Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung are two operas that represent a significant departure from the conventions of Classical Opera. Both works have been attributed to Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg respectively. These two compositions drew inspiration from their predecessors in the early 19th century but sought to push the boundaries of music, particularly within the realm of opera.

Classical Opera was characterized by its adherence to traditional forms and themes. It placed great emphasis on lyrical vocal lines, formulas for harmony structure, and thematic development that obeyed set norms. The plots were also driven by strict control of dramatic tension, meant to meet the conventional expectations of its audience.

However, both Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung sought to break free from these conventions to mirror the tumultuous times when they were composed. In doing so, they were able to offer a new approach to presenting music stories, not only within the context of opera but also in overall classical music.

In the case of Bluebeard’s Castle, the story is about the Duke Bluebeard, who invites his new wife Judith into his castle. She uncovers various rooms, each of which represents different elements of Bluebeard’s psyche, including his ruthless, violent, and explicit aspects. This opera presents an almost psychological portrayal of human nature, never before seen in Classical Opera.

The dissonant and sparse arrangement of orchestration used to highlight Bluebeard’s Castle's darkness is deeply unsettling yet beautiful. Bartók rejects the traditional diatonic scales found in Classical Opera, instead employing chromatic movement throughout the composition. This allows him to develop harmonic textures that convey violence, foreboding, and despair that correspond to the narrative of the opera.

Similarly, Arnold Schönberg’s Erwartung breaks free from Classical Opera by using atonal music to convey the turmoil inside the narrator's mind. This one-act chamber opera explores the psyche of a woman walking alone in a forest at night. It is a powerful response by Schönberg to the disruptive world and societal relationships prevalent in early 20th century.

The lack of melody and jarring use of different timbres and tonalities serves only to heighten the sense of isolation and despair that the protagonist experiences as she searches for her lover. This challenging composition, characterized by its unrelenting discord, became a cornerstone of Expressionism in music.

In summary, Bluebeard's Castle and Erwartung represent a major shift in the operatic form from Classical Opera conventions. Unlike their predecessors, they examine the psychological depths of human nature using contemporary musical approaches. Today these two pieces are considered among the most outstanding works of music of their genre and have paved the way for future innovations.
