Bluebeard's Castle & Erwartung Tickets

Both works have been attributed to Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg respectively. These two compositions drew inspiration from their predecessors in the early 19th century but sought to push the boundaries of music, particularly within the realm of opera.

This allows him to develop harmonic textures that convey violence, foreboding, and despair that correspond to the narrative of the opera.

Similarly, Arnold Schönberg’s Erwartung breaks free from Classical Opera by using atonal music to convey the turmoil inside the narrator's mind. This one-act chamber opera explores the psyche of a woman walking alone in a forest at night. It is a powerful response by Schönberg to the disruptive world and societal relationships prevalent in early 20th century.

The lack of melody and jarring use of different timbres and tonalities serves only to heighten the sense of isolation and despair that the protagonist experiences as she searches for her lover. This challenging composition, characterized by its unrelenting discord, became a cornerstone of Expressionism in music.
