Calumet College of St. Joseph, located in Whiting, Indiana, may not be a household name when it comes to college basketball, but the Crimson Wave are making strides in the sport.

The men's basketball team, led by Head Coach Dominique Naeole, had a successful 2019-2020 season, finishing with a 27-7 record and making it to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II Tournament. The team also claimed the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular-season title and tournament championship.

While the 2020-2021 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Crimson Wave continued to make progress, finishing with a 15-3 record in conference play and earning a spot in the CCAC Tournament championship game.

The women's basketball team, under Head Coach Angelica Harris, has also seen success in recent years. In the 2018-2019 season, the team finished with a winning record and advanced to the CCAC Tournament quarterfinals.

So, how does Calumet College Crimson Wave basketball compare to other college basketball programs?

While they may not have the same level of recognition as teams in Division I, such as Duke or North Carolina, the Crimson Wave are still competing at a high level. The NAIA, where Calumet College competes, is made up of smaller schools and offers its own national championship tournament.

In fact, some NAIA schools have even produced professional NBA players, including Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen who played at the University of Central Arkansas (an NAIA school at the time).

Calumet College's success is also reflected in individual player achievements. In the 2019-2020 season, senior guard/forward Armon Williams was named First Team All-CCAC and Second Team All-American by the NAIA.

Furthermore, at the heart of college basketball is the development and growth of the student-athletes. The Crimson Wave have seen success not only on the court but also in academic achievement. Both the men's and women's teams have been recognized for their academic success, earning NAIA Scholar Team awards multiple times.

Overall, while Calumet College may not be the first school that comes to mind when thinking about college basketball, the Crimson Wave are making a name for themselves through hard work, dedication, and success both on and off the court.
