The Can-Am 500 is one of the biggest races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. It's held annually at the Phoenix International Raceway, located in Avondale, Arizona. The race is a part of the final eight that marks the playoff round as drivers strive for a position in the championship race.

Originally known as the Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500, the race was inaugurated in 1988 and became a bi-annual event starting in 2005. However, it wasn't until 2012 when the event became the penultimate race in the Sprint Cup Series, replacing the Texas Motor Speedway that previously held this position.

The Can-Am 500 is highly anticipated since it holds significant weight in determining which drivers will qualify for the championship decider. Winning alone does not guarantee a driver their spot in the last four; however, it increases their chances significantly. Several drivers below the cut line yearn to make it to victory lane because anything can happen heading into the final race.

In previous years, many racers have had a chance to come out with a win to reach the final four. In 2014 and 2015, both races came down to the final laps where Kevin Harvick came from behind twice to take the checkered flag. He ultimately went on to win the championship in 2014.

Another great race was in 2016 when Joey Logano won after a brawl between the pit crews of him and another driver led to multiple penalties and ejections. Logano secured his spot in the championship race, which he ultimately reached but lost to Jimmie Johnson.

To sum up, the Can-Am 500 is more than just another race. It's the second-to-last stop for drivers before they hang up their helmets. Making it to this race guarantees a driver has had an excellent season so far. But it's the last eight who have a chance to claim the title and engrave their name in history. So, what will this year's Can-Am 500 bring? We'll have to wait and see!
