The idea for the Chicago Express came about in 2009 when owners Craig Drecktrah and Rich Menna saw a need for minor league hockey in the city of Chicago. The Windy City had not had a professional ice hockey team since the Chicago Hounds folded in 2006. Drecktrah and Menna secured franchise rights from the ECHL and began building their team from the ground up.
In preparation for the inaugural season in 2011, the Chicago Express hired coach Steve Martinson, who had previously led the Anchorage Aces to two championships in the ECHL. Under Martinson's leadership, the team boasted an impressive lineup of players, including ex-NHL players Rob Klinkhammer and Adam Hobson, as well as several AHL veterans.
Despite being a new team, the Chicago Express quickly gained a strong following from passionate hockey fans in the city. The team played home games at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, which provided ample room for fans to cheer and tailgate before games. Martinson also implemented an aggressive style of play that made the team one of the most exciting to watch in the ECHL.
Unfortunately, financial difficulties plagued the Chicago Express throughout the 2011-2012 season. Despite having a strong roster and fan base, the team struggled to make ends meet due to low attendance and revenue. In January of 2012, the team went on hiatus and eventually folded at the end of the season.
Although the Chicago Express may have been short-lived, its impact on minor league hockey in the Midwest should not be overlooked. The team brought a new level of excitement and energy to the sport in Chicago, inspiring other teams to follow in their footsteps. Today, several minor league hockey teams have taken up residence in the city, including the Chicago Wolves (AHL) and the Chicago Steel (USHL).
