On March 13th, 2021, Colorado was hit by a massive blizzard that left over two feet of snow in some areas. The storm resulted in several road closures and power outages, causing chaos throughout the state. This significant weather event also had an impact on local sports such as soccer, leaving players and fans questioning what this would mean for their games.

Soccer is a sport played primarily outdoors, so when a storm like this hits, it can have severe repercussions on the schedule. Several soccer matches had to be postponed or rescheduled due to the blizzard. The Colorado State Soccer Association (CSSA) announced that all scheduled games for the weekend would be postponed due to safety concerns caused by the blizzard. Many teams had to find new dates for games or rearrange schedules to fit in postponed matches later in the season.

For some players, this storm meant a chance to have a break from the usual training routine. Snowfalls are relatively uncommon in the spring months in Colorado, so many players took advantage of the conditions to have fun in the snow. Some youth clubs canceled their regular weekend games and instead organized winter tournaments in the snow. Players had the chance to show off their skills while enjoying the rare sight of a soccer match in the snow.

However, not everyone saw the storm as a welcome break. College players were particularly affected by these postponements as their tight schedules often leave little flexibility for rescheduling games. NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer team Denver University suffered the most with the storm's aftermath. Their game against Summit League rival South Dakota State was postponed twice, the first time due to COVID-19 protocols, before the second postponement due to the blizzard. Denver University’s head coach Jamie Franks expressed his frustration at the storm, noting how important it was for the players to maintain their physical condition despite the postponed games.

In conclusion, Colorado’s recent blizzard disrupted the soccer schedule for many teams and players in the state. However, the storm also gave some an opportunity to enjoy a rare snow-covered pitch experience. The postponements and rescheduling of matches have caused frustration for some, but safety must remain a top priority during such severe weather events. It’s essential to recognize that Mother Nature can always have an impact on sports schedules, and organizers should plan accordingly to minimize disruption where possible.
