Galway United is a professional football team that hails from the coastal city of Galway, located on the west coast of Ireland. It was founded in 1937 and plays its home games at Eamonn Deacy Park, named after former Galway soccer player Eamonn Deacy. Galway United has seen a prosperous history within Irish football and has been an exciting team to watch for many fans.

The club has gone through various name changes over the years, beginning as Galway Rovers before becoming Galway United in 1981 after a merger with Galway Celtic, which was founded initially in 1975. The merging of Galway Celtic and Galway Rovers set Galway United on the right track to dominating the soccer scene in Ireland. They won their first-ever title, the First Division League, in 1977 only five years after the team's creation. This marked the start of the ascension for Galway United; however, it would take them another ten years to claim a second title.

With seven appearances in the League of Ireland Cup final, the club has claimed the trophy twice: once in 1985 and more recently in 2015. The team also reached the FAI Cup Final in 1991 when they were beaten by Shamrock Rovers.

Despite their significant accomplishments, Galway United has yet to be crowned champions of the League of Ireland, with the closest being minor premiers twice in 1977–78 and 1984-85. One instance where they came close was in 2014 under then-manager Tommy Dunne, finishing third behind Dundalk and Cork City. However, due to financial struggles, Galway United struggled to maintain that level of performance, and as such, they have languished in the First Division since 2018.

Galway United has frequently produced talent for Irish football, including some star players such as Seamus McDonagh, Tommy Keane, Paul McGee, Johnny Glynn, and Derek Rogers. Their current squad comprises primarily of rising young talent from the west of Ireland.

The club currently competes in the First Division of the League of Ireland, which is the second tier in Irish football. While Galway United may not be enjoying its best days at the moment, the team still possesses vast potential and has an active support base that faithfully attends their matches. With new investors taking control of the club recently, it’s exciting to see where this illustrious club might go in the future.
