The George Mason Patriots are a women's basketball team from George Mason University, located in Fairfax, Virginia. The team has a long and proud history, dating back to the 1970s, and has seen many talented players over the years. They compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference of the NCAA Division I.

The history of the Patriots' women's basketball team dates back to 1973 when they first began playing against other colleges. Since then, the team has seen much success, though not always on a national level. In 1986, they made their first appearances in the NCAA Tournament, while under Head Coach Jim Lewis. Though the team failed to advance past the first round, it was a great accomplishment as they were still considered a "new" program in some eyes.

Years later, in 1999, the Patriots made history by becoming the first #14 seed to upset a #3 seed in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. To kick off the new millennium, Mason won its first-ever conference championship in 2001, earning an automatic berth into the tournament that season. Then, in 2004, Mason finished with a record of 20-11 including an undefeated mark at home.

Must note that there will be updates coming out for the 2021-2022 season. Including newly hired Lynne Agee who was introduced as the head coach for George Mason’s women’s basketball team in April of 2021. Agee comes to Mason after spending 15 years at Belmont University where she compiled an overall 270-162 (.625) record and an impressive 176-46 (.793) mark in Ohio Valley Conference play.

Despite the highs and lows, the Patriots have maintained a strong reputation in women's basketball, producing numerous stand-out stars throughout the years. Some notable alumni include NBA TV analyst and broadcaster Rosalyn Gold-Onwude, veteran forward Chasity Rogers, Shannon Evans, and CeCe Crudup. Both Gold-Onwude and Rogers were named to the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Silver Anniversary women’s basketball team in 2020; an honor reserved for the best individual players in the conference’s history.

As a current member of the Atlantic-10 conference, the Patriots are still a force to be reckoned with as they plan to take on their biggest competitors such as Dayton, VCU, UMass, and Fordham in hopes of earning higher standing in the conference. Fans should keep an eye out for incoming freshman or "rookies" looking to make a big impact.

In conclusion, the George Mason Patriots have been a formidable women's basketball program for many years. Through hard work and dedication, the program has produced numerous talented athletes that continue to shape college women's basketball every season. As they move into the future, we can expect them to remain a competitive presence on the court, fighting towards excellence.
