The Grand Rapids Ballet has once again brought a unique and mesmerizing dance experience with the MOVEMEDIA: Program II. The show, which ran from March 13-15, featured five different contemporary ballet pieces that showcased the technical abilities and artistry of the company's talented dancers.

The show opened with "Memory Glow," choreographed by Josie Walsh. The piece explored themes of nostalgia and the passage of time, with dancers moving in fluid, sweeping motions that perfectly complemented the hauntingly beautiful music by composer Alexander Balanescu. The lighting design, with its warm, glowing hues, added to the dreamlike quality of the piece.

Next up was "Chrysalis," choreographed by Penny Saunders. This piece had a more abstract feel, with dancers in black and white leotards moving in sharp, angular movements that played off each other's bodies. The score, which consisted mostly of percussive beats, added an intense energy to the piece.

The third piece, "Humans Anonymous," choreographed by Brian Enos, was a refreshing change of pace. The humorous and theatrical piece featured a group of dancers sharing their "problems" with the audience, ranging from social media addiction to laziness. The choreography, which incorporated elements of jazz and hip-hop, was lively and fun, leaving the audience smiling and clapping along.

"Contrast," choreographed by Mario Radacovsky, was the fourth piece of the night. This piece explored the relationship between light and shadow, with dancers moving in and out of pools of light on the stage. The stark contrast between the bright and dark areas created a visually stunning effect, and the dancers' intricate partnering work added a layer of emotional depth to the piece.

Finally, the show closed with "This is Not a Love Song," choreographed by Robyn Mineko Williams. This piece was perhaps the most emotionally charged of the night, with dancers exploring the complex and often tumultuous relationships between couples. The score by composer Sean Nieuwenhuis created a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere, and the dancers' raw and powerful performances left the audience stunned.

Overall, the Grand Rapids Ballet's MOVEMEDIA: Program II was a unique and dynamic showcase of contemporary ballet at its finest. From sweeping, dreamlike pieces to sharp, angular movements, each piece was masterfully crafted and performed by the talented dancers of the company. With its diverse range of styles and themes, the show had something for every dance lover, making it a must-see for anyone interested in the world of dance.
