The Illinois Piasa, also known as the Chicago Piasa, was a professional soccer team based in Chicago, Illinois. The team competed in the United Soccer League (USL) for only one season, in 1982.

Despite their brief existence, the Piasa left a lasting impression on the Chicago soccer scene. The team's name was inspired by a Native American legend of a creature with the head of a bearded man and the body of a dragon or serpent. This mythological creature was said to dwell near the Mississippi River and prey on humans.

The Piasa logo featured an illustration of this beast, which quickly became iconic among soccer fans in the region. In addition to its distinctive emblem, the team also boasted a talented roster that included several notable players.

One of the most memorable moments of the Piasa's lone season came in a match against the Detroit Express, when midfielder Dave Logan scored a hat trick to lead the team to a 5-0 victory. The win was especially sweet for Logan, who had been cut from the Express earlier in the year.

Despite some successes on the field, the Piasa struggled to draw large crowds to their games. The team played its home matches at Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago, which had a capacity of just over 6,000 spectators.

After the 1982 season, the Piasa folded due to financial difficulties. However, the team's legacy lives on through its distinctive logo and the memories of those who followed them during their brief existence.

Today, soccer continues to be a popular sport in Illinois, with amateur and professional teams alike competing throughout the state. While the Illinois Piasa may be long gone, their contribution to the local soccer community should not be forgotten.
