Soccer, otherwise known as football, may not be the most popular sport in New Zealand, but it certainly has a passionate following. While the country's national team, the All Whites, may not have made a huge impact on the international scene, their journey to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was nothing short of remarkable.

New Zealand's first foray into international soccer came in 1922 when they played against Australia in Sydney. It wasn't until 1982 that they qualified for their first FIFA World Cup, and they failed to progress past the group stages.

Fast forward to 2010, and the All Whites topped their qualifying group to book a spot in the World Cup for just the second time. They were drawn against Italy, Slovakia, and Paraguay in the group stage, and many pundits predicted that they would struggle to make an impact.

However, New Zealand shocked the world by drawing all three of their matches, including a famous 1-1 draw against Italy, who went on to win the World Cup four years earlier. It was an incredible achievement for a country with a population of just over 4 million people.

Despite their heroics in South Africa, the All Whites have struggled to replicate that success in subsequent World Cup campaigns. They failed to qualify for the 2014 tournament in Brazil and finished bottom of their group at the 2018 edition in Russia.

In terms of domestic soccer, the main competition in New Zealand is the ISPS Handa Premiership, which features teams from various regions across the country. The Wellington Phoenix, who compete in Australia's A-League, are also based in New Zealand and are the only professional team in the country.

While soccer may not be the most popular sport in New Zealand, it has a dedicated following, and the All Whites' achievements in 2010 will be remembered for years to come. With the sport continuing to grow around the world, there's no doubt that New Zealand will produce more talented soccer players in the future.
