Northern Illinois University may not be a household name in college football, but the Huskies have quietly become a consistent force in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and on the national stage.

Since joining the MAC in 1997, NIU has won six conference championships and appeared in 12 bowl games. The Huskies have also been ranked in the top 25 nationally multiple times, including a #12 finish in the final AP Poll of the 2012 season after a remarkable run to the Orange Bowl.

So how has this program, located in the small city of DeKalb in northern Illinois, achieved such success? Much of it can be attributed to a series of talented coaches and players who embody the team’s “hard-hitting” identity.

Joe Novak, who coached the Huskies from 1996 to 2007, laid the foundation for the modern era of NIU football. He led the team to its first MAC championship in 2002 and emphasized physicality and toughness as hallmarks of the program. Novak’s successor Jerry Kill continued that mindset and took the Huskies to new heights, winning three consecutive MAC titles from 2010-2012.

It was under Kill’s tenure that the Huskies became national darlings, upsetting major conference teams such as Minnesota, Kansas, and Iowa State. Those upsets were fueled in part by dynamic quarterbacks in Chandler Harnish and Jordan Lynch, both of whom set numerous records and earned All-America honors during their respective tenures at NIU.

Current head coach Thomas Hammock, a former player and assistant coach at NIU, has carried on the tradition established by Novak and Kill. In his second year leading the program, Hammock guided the Huskies to a win over rival Toledo and narrowly missed out on a MAC West division title. While 2020 was a challenging year due to COVID-19, Hammock has continued to recruit well and develop talent, giving NIU fans optimism for the future.

Despite not being a Power Five program, Northern Illinois has regularly produced NFL-caliber talent. Some notable alumni include running back Michael Turner, defensive end Larry English, and safety Jimmie Ward. The program’s reputation for toughness and grit is also reflected in the “Hard Hat” award, given annually to the team's hardest-working player.

All of this points to NIU football as a testament to how smaller programs can carve out a niche in the college football landscape. While they may not always receive the national attention of bigger schools, the Huskies have proven that sustained success can be achieved through strong coaching, physical play, and a never-back-down attitude. In a sport often dominated by the biggest and wealthiest programs, Northern Illinois serves as a reminder that anything is possible on the gridiron.
