The Northland College Lumberjacks men’s basketball team competes in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The team has had some ups and downs over the years, but they have made strides in building a successful program. In the 2019-2020 season, the team finished with a record of 13-12, their best record in almost two decades.
One of the key players on the team is junior guard, Thomas Gathje. Gathje was named to the All-UMAC first team in the 2019-2020 season after averaging 16.5 points per game. He is known for his strong shooting skills and ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Despite being a relatively small team, the Lumberjacks have a strong work ethic and are constantly improving their game. Head Coach Scott Sorenson emphasizes the importance of team chemistry and hard work in their success on the court. The team practices and plays in the newly-renovated Hunt Arena, which includes a new hardwood court and improved seating areas for fans.
In addition to the men's team, Northland College also has a women's basketball team that competes in the UMAC. They have also experienced some recent success, finishing with a record of 11-14 in the 2019-2020 season.
Basketball is just one aspect of Northland College, but it certainly adds to the culture and excitement on campus. Students and alumni alike come out to support the teams at home games, creating a sense of community and pride in the school.
Overall, Northland College’s basketball program may not be the most well-known, but it is certainly making strides and gaining recognition in the competitive landscape of college basketball. With dedicated coaches and talented players, it will be exciting to see how the Lumberjacks continue to grow and improve in the years to come.
