O (formerly Black Cobra Vipers): A Theatrical Triumph

When the news broke that a play based on the lives of black soldiers who fought in World War I was being performed on Broadway, many theatergoers were excited. O (formerly Black Cobra Vipers), written by young playwright Breshaun Joyner, had already garnered high praise during its off-Broadway run, and theater critics were eager to see how it would fare on a larger stage.

The play centers around four members of the 369th Infantry Regiment – an all-black unit that fought in WWI under the French Army due to segregation policies in the United States military. The regiment earned the nickname "Harlem Hellfighters" for their bravery and tenacity on the battlefield.

Joyner's story is not your typical war drama, however. Instead of focusing solely on the horrors of trench warfare, she uses the experiences of the soldiers to explore themes of identity, community, and sacrifice. The quartet of soldiers at the heart of the play – Private First Class "King" Johnson (portrayed by Jelani Alladin), Corporal William McBride (Antonio Michael Woodard), Private Robert Hinchliffe (Austin Smith), and a new recruit named Gabriel (Nabil Traboulsi) – each bring their own unique perspective and struggles to the frontline.

As much as the soldiers try to band together and support one another, they are often met with racism and disdain from both their fellow soldiers and those back home. The play doesn't shy away from the ugly realities of America's history of racial injustice, but it also never loses sight of the humanity of its characters.

Director Whitney White brings a vibrant, kinetic energy to the production, utilizing dynamic movement sequences and projections to create a sense of urgency and momentum. The set design by Yu-Hsuan Chen is sparse but effective, allowing the actors to fully inhabit the space while also providing immersive backdrops for the play's various locales.

O (formerly Black Cobra Vipers) is not without its flaws, of course. At times, Joyner's script can feel a bit on-the-nose in its messaging, and certain plot points – such as the character of Gabriel's tragic backstory – feel rushed or underdeveloped. But these issues never detract from the overall emotional impact of the play, which builds to a devastating yet ultimately uplifting conclusion.

Ultimately, O (formerly Black Cobra Vipers) is a powerful and necessary addition to the canon of war plays and African American theater. It is a reminder that black soldiers have long fought and died for a country that often does not value them, and that their stories deserve to be told and honored.
