Philadelphia Independence was a professional women's soccer team based in Pennsylvania. The team was established in 2010 and played in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) until its dissolution in early 2012. The team was named to honor the city's role in American independence, as Philadelphia played a crucial role in the founding of the United States.

The Independence had a strong roster of players, including US national team veterans Heather Mitts and Lori Lindsey, Brazilian star Marta, and Australian international Kyah Simon. The team reached the WPS playoffs in both of its seasons, finishing third in 2010 and second in 2011.

Despite the team's success on the field, financial struggles plagued the Independence throughout its short existence. In September 2011, team owner David Halstead announced that he would no longer fund the team and sought new ownership or investors. Despite efforts from fans and community members to save the team, the Independence folded in January 2012 when no buyer could be found.

The loss of the Independence was a blow to the soccer community in Philadelphia and to women's soccer as a whole. The team had provided a platform for some of the best players in the world to showcase their skills and had brought high-level professional soccer to a city with a rich soccer history.

However, the legacy of the Independence lives on. Several former Independence players have continued to play at the highest levels of women's soccer, including Mitts and Lindsey, who both retired after the 2013 season. The team's former home ground, PPL Park (now Subaru Park), has hosted several major international soccer events since the Independence disbanded, including the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

In addition, the Independence helped pave the way for the current success of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), which was formed in 2013 following the demise of WPS. The NWSL has now completed eight seasons and is the top women's professional soccer league in the United States, with nine teams currently competing.

In conclusion, while the Philadelphia Independence's stint in Women's Professional Soccer was short-lived, the team made a lasting impact on the sport and on the city of Philadelphia. The Independence provided a platform for some of the best players in the world to showcase their skills, helped pave the way for the current success of the NWSL, and left a lasting legacy at Subaru Park, which continues to be a hub for high-level professional soccer in the United States.
