Power Trip LA: Empowering Theatre-Makers in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has long been regarded as the entertainment capital of the world. With Hollywood at its center, it's no surprise that the city has become known for its thriving theater community as well. However, with the rise of gentrification and commercialization, many smaller theater companies and independent theatre-makers are feeling left behind. Enter Power Trip LA, an organization working to empower marginalized voices and provide resources for those looking to break into the industry in a meaningful way.

Founded by Claudia de Vasco and Jorge Roman in 2019, Power Trip LA was created out of a desire to address the lack of diversity and representation in the Los Angeles theater scene. Both De Vasco and Roman are immigrants who believe in creating opportunities for others like themselves.

"Our mission is to provide a platform for underrepresented and underserved artists so that they have visibility and access to resources," says De Vasco. "We want to enrich the experiences of local communities through engaging artistic productions, performances, education, and outreach."

One of the main ways that Power Trip LA accomplishes this goal is through their annual Powerfest, a festival showcasing new work from emerging theater-makers. The festival includes workshops, mentorships, and networking opportunities, all designed to support artists in taking the next step in building their careers.

"We want to be a resource for theater-makers who don't necessarily have access to the same networks and resources as others in the industry," explains Roman. "We want to give them a voice and a platform."

Power Trip LA has also taken on a leadership role in advocating for more equitable funding and support for independent theater companies in LA. They work closely with local government officials and other arts organizations to help secure funding and resources for smaller theaters.

"We believe that theater has the power to transform people and communities," says De Vasco. "But we need to ensure that everyone has access to those transformative experiences."

Through their work, Power Trip LA is helping to create a more inclusive and dynamic theater scene in Los Angeles that reflects the diversity of the city. By providing resources and support for underrepresented artists and independent theater companies, they are helping to ensure that the voices of all Angelenos are heard.

As De Vasco puts it, "Theater is not something that should be reserved for the privileged few. It's something that belongs to all of us." With organizations like Power Trip LA working to create opportunities for all, the future of theater in Los Angeles looks bright.
