In late 2014, Rayo Vallecano, a professional soccer club from Madrid, Spain, announced that they would be partnering with a new franchise in Oklahoma City. The goal of this partnership was to create a pathway for young American players to potentially pursue careers in Europe, while also expanding Rayo's brand globally.
Rayo OKC began play in the NASL in April 2016, but their inaugural season was plagued by financial struggles and inconsistency on the field. They finished ninth out of twelve teams and were unable to qualify for the postseason.
Rumors persisted throughout the year that MLS was interested in bringing a team to Oklahoma City, potentially displacing Rayo OKC as the top professional soccer team in the market. In November 2016, those rumors seemed to be confirmed when it was reported that an investor group consisting of several former NFL players had secured land in downtown Oklahoma City for a new multi-purpose stadium.
Since that time, little has been reported about the possibility of MLS coming to Oklahoma City, and Rayo OKC continues to play in the NASL. However, the team has undergone significant changes in ownership and management. In December 2016, the team was sold to Prodigal LLC, a company owned by local businessman Sean Jones.
Jones brought in new coaching staff and signed several talented players ahead of the 2017 season, with the goal of improving on the team's lackluster debut season. Early results have been promising, as Rayo OKC currently sits third in the NASL standings through the first month of the season.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding their future and MLS's potential interest, Rayo OKC remains focused on building a successful soccer franchise in Oklahoma City. For now, they will continue to compete in the NASL and work towards winning a championship, while also developing players and expanding the game of soccer in their community.
