Roberto Duran is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. His career spanned over three decades, during which he won multiple world championships in four different weight classes and became a legend in the sport of boxing.

Duran was born on June 16, 1951, in Panama City, Panama. He grew up in poverty and was forced to drop out of school at the age of 14 to work as a shoeshine boy. Despite his circumstances, Duran found solace in boxing and began training with local coaches.

In 1968, Duran made his professional debut at the age of 16 and quickly established himself as a promising young fighter. He won his first 31 fights before suffering his first loss to Esteban De Jesus in 1972.

Duran rebounded from his defeat and went on to win the WBA lightweight title in 1972. Over the next decade, he dominated the division, successfully defending his title thirteen times. Along the way, he also claimed victories over notable opponents such as Carlos Palomino, Ken Buchanan, and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Duran’s most famous fight came in 1980, when he faced Sugar Ray Leonard in a highly anticipated bout for the WBC welterweight title. The fight became known as the “Brawl in Montreal” and ended with Duran claiming a close unanimous decision victory.

However, Duran’s legacy was tarnished in the rematch, where he infamously quit in the eighth round, uttering the words “no mas” to the referee, handing Leonard the victory and sparking criticism from fans and fellow boxers alike.

Despite this setback, Duran remained an active boxer well into his forties and retired in 2002 with a record of 103 wins, 16 losses, and 70 knockouts.

Duran’s impact on the sport of boxing can still be felt today. He was known for his aggressive fighting style and fierce determination, earning him the nickname “Manos de Piedra” or “Hands of Stone”. Duran was also a trailblazer for Latin American fighters, paving the way for future champions such as Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Duran was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007. His life story was also depicted in the 2016 biographical film “Hands of Stone”, starring Edgar Ramirez as Duran and Robert De Niro as his trainer, Ray Arcel.

Roberto Duran will always be remembered as one of boxing’s greatest icons, a true champion whose name will forever be etched in the history books.
