The Hilbert Circle Theatre is an iconic event venue located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It was built in 1916 and since then has been the home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. It is a beautiful venue that holds significance not just as a concert hall but also as a historical landmark. The Hilbert Circle Theatre has played host to concerts, weddings, seminars, fundraisers, and many other events. Let's explore the Hilbert Circle Theatre’s history, design, and significance as an event venue.

History

Originally named the Circle Theatre it was designed by Arthur Bohn in 1916 and opened just two years later after renovations worth $1 million (equivalent to about $22 million today). The theatre originally hosted different kinds of performances ranging from movies to vaudeville performances. However, it was poorly attended which led to its closure in 1949. In 1984 the theatre underwent a renovation that was sponsored by philanthropist Christel DeHaan, she also changed its name to the Hilbert Circle Theatre to honor the memory of Reverend Theodore F. Hilbert. Today, the commissioned stained glass window behind the stage pays tribute to both the Hilbert family as well as four major Indianapolis symphony orchestra stalwarts: Raymond Leppard, Mario Venzago, John Nelson and Kirk Trevor.

Design

The Hilbert Circle Theatre has undergone several architectural changes over the years, however, it still retains its classic design that dates back to the early 1900s. It seats up to 1,700 people and has quite an interesting layout. Its main seating area is divided into three sections -- with balcony seating on the second floor. The theatre has excellent acoustics; therefore, speakers, music performers, and orchestras are able to project their sound throughout the auditorium without issue.

Events

As an event venue, the Hilbert Circle Theatre has a lot to offer. Its iconic design and historical significance make it a perfect venue for hosting concerts, weddings, business meetings, seminars, fundraisers, luncheons, and many more. The theatre has a catering kitchen that can be used for preparing food which makes it ideal for hosting large banquets. Anyone looking for a unique event venue that feels both classic and classy cannot go wrong with the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

Conclusion

The Hilbert Circle Theatre is not just an event venue but rather a piece of Indianapolis history. Its gorgeous design, impeccable acoustics, and rich history make it an attractive place for anyone looking to host an event. Whether you are planning a wedding, fundraiser, or seminar, the Hilbert Circle Theatre will leave a long-lasting impression on your guests. This magnificent structure represents a perfect blend of history, architecture, and culture that resonates with everyone who sets foot in it.
