Directions to Mississippi Nights
Mississippi Nights, located in St. Louis, Missouri, was a popular venue for live music from 1979 to 2007. The venue was located on Laclede’s Landing, which is a historic district located on the waterfront of the Mississippi River. Over the years, Mississippi Nights hosted thousands of bands across all genres of music. Bands like Nirvana, R.E.M., Chuck Berry, and Pearl Jam all played at Mississippi Nights.
It's hard to imagine that such an unassuming venue could have such a far-reaching impact on the music scene. Mississippi Nights was one of the first venues in the Midwest to host emerging indie and punk rock bands. By bringing these bands to the venue where people could hear them play live, it helped build a passionate following of fans who would go on to follow these bands for years.
The venue had a unique setting that made concerts feel more intimate than at other venues. With a capacity of just over 1,000, there wasn't a bad seat in the house, and you felt like you were part of the show, no matter where you were standing. The stage was set up right in front of the Mississippi River, providing a unique backdrop that added an extra element to the concert experience.
Mississippi Nights also played a key role in the community as well. The venue brought together different groups of people who were united by their love of live music. The sense of community that was created within the walls of Mississippi Nights was something really special. It was a place where people felt free to be themselves and express their love for music without judgement.
Sadly, after twenty-eight years of playing host to some of the best concerts in St. Louis, Mississippi Nights closed its doors. There are many factors that contributed to its eventual closure, including rising rents, changing tastes in music, and the move towards larger venues that could accommodate more people.
Despite its closure, Mississippi Nights has left behind a legacy that will continue to influence music in St. Louis and beyond for years to come. The impact that it had on the local music scene is still felt today, as venues like The Ready Room and Fubar host shows that follow in the footsteps of Mississippi Nights. While it may be gone, Mississippi Nights has not been forgotten by those who were lucky enough to experience live music within its walls.
