The Seattle Redhawks are the athletic team of Seattle University, an institution of higher learning located in the Emerald City. The origins of the Seattle Redhawks can be traced back to 1947 when Seattle University fielded its first basketball team, which played their games at the Men's Civic Auditorium in downtown Seattle.
Seattle University is a member of the NCAA Division I and competes in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Seattle Redhawks have men's and women's basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, track and field, and tennis teams, while the volleyball team competes in the Big Sky Conference.
In recent years, Seattle University has experienced a resurgence in athletics, particularly in men's and women's basketball. The men's team has made two trips to the NCAA Tournament in the past six years. In 2016, they advanced to the round of 64 and defeated Southern Methodist University 66-62, becoming the first WAC team to win an NCAA tournament game since Utah State in 2001.
The women's team has also seen success, appearing in the Women's National Invitation Tournament twice in the past five years. In 2020, Seattle University won the WAC tournament championship but were unable to participate in the NCAA tournament due to its cancellation because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to basketball success, the Seattle Redhawks have also had successful seasons in other sports. The men's and women's soccer team both won conference titles in 2019, while the men's tennis team won its fourth straight WAC championship in 2021.
Off the field, the Seattle Redhawks are active in the community, giving back through various service projects and charitable endeavors.
