The first time that Sunderland FC competed in Europe was in the 1973-74 UEFA Cup. Sunderland finished as runners-up in the English League Cup, which earned them a place in the UEFA Cup. This was due to the club's impressive run in the FA Cup the previous season, which saw them reach the quarterfinals. Sunderland did not make it past the group stage, finishing bottom of their group, which included FC Twente, FC Copenhagen, and Stoke City.
Despite their limited European history, Sunderland FC has produced players who have gone on to play at the highest level in Europe. Players like Thomas Sørensen, Anton Ferdinand, and Asamoah Gyan have all played in various European competitions during their careers.
In recent years, Sunderland FC has struggled to establish themselves as a consistent force in English football.
