The history of the Swinton Lions dates back to 1866 when a group of local miners formed a club called Swinton Football Club. The club later changed its name to Swinton Rugby Club in 1871 before finally adopting the current name, Swinton Lions, in 1992.
Throughout its history, Swinton Lions have won numerous honours including the Rugby League Challenge Cup in 1928, the Lancashire County Cup three times, and the Rugby League Premiership four times. In addition, Swinton Lions have produced several notable players who went on to represent England and Great Britain at international level.
Despite its illustrious history, Swinton Lions have faced financial difficulties in recent times which have hindered their progress on the field. In 2017, the club was relegated to the third tier of English rugby league - the League One - due to financial constraints.
However, under the leadership of coach Stuart Littler, Swinton Lions are steadily rebuilding and making progress towards regaining their status as a top team in English rugby league. The club secured promotion back to the Championship in 2019 and are looking to establish themselves as a competitive force once again.
Off the field, Swinton Lions have a strong fanbase and are actively involved in community outreach programs. The club runs various initiatives such as junior rugby league teams, disability rugby league programs, and a women's team to promote the sport of rugby league in the local community.
