The UAB Blazers Football program was founded in 1991 and began playing its first season in 1992. Despite being a new program, the Blazers quickly made a name for themselves by winning the NCAA Division III national championship in just their third year of existence. From there, the team moved up to Division II and continued to find success, reaching the playoffs four times in seven seasons.
In 2007, the Blazers moved up to Division I and joined Conference USA. They struggled initially, going just 3-9 in their first season, but slowly but surely began to build a competitive team. In 2014, the Blazers won their first bowl game, defeating the Ohio Bobcats 24-23 in the Bahamas Bowl. However, just two years later, the university made the decision to shut down the program due to financial concerns.
After a two-year hiatus, the Blazers returned in 2017 with a vengeance. Led by head coach Bill Clark, who remained with the program throughout the shutdown, the Blazers put together one of the best turnarounds in college football history. In just their second year back, the Blazers won the Conference USA championship and earned their first-ever berth in the Boca Raton Bowl.
The Blazers continued their success in the 2020 season, going 6-3 despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The team was once again led by Clark, who was named Conference USA Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
Despite their relatively short history, the UAB Blazers Football program has left a lasting impact on college football. They are proof that even a new program can achieve success with the right leadership, support, and strategy.
