The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is home to the Kangaroos, a team that has been making a name for themselves in soccer. The UMKC Kangaroos compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and are part of the Western Athletic Conference.

Soccer has always been an important sport at UMKC, with the men’s and women’s teams competing every year. The UMKC Kangaroos men's soccer team has had tremendous success over the years, and has made several appearances in the NCAA tournament. Their highest-ranking was in 2008, where they were ranked as high as number 22 in the nation. They have also won multiple conference championships in the Summit League, prior to joining the WAC.

The women's soccer team has also found success in recent years, having won the regular season championship twice in 2015 and 2018 under the coaching of Chris Cissell who resigned after the 2022 season. Current coach Jeremy Proud took over from Cissell in 2022.

One standout player for the UMKC Kangaroos men's soccer team is Eric McWoods. In 2021, he was named to the United Soccer Coaches first-team all-region and selected to Major League Soccer’s 2022 rising MLS combine list. Another standout player, Andrew Riggs, was a three time All-WAC First Team selection, one-time WAC Defensive Player of the Year, and finished his career with 17 shutouts.

Despite playing on a smaller stage than some larger schools around the country, the UMKC Kangaroos have developed a strong program and are highly respected within the soccer community. The Kangaroos’ soccer success has even led to a number of players being selected in the MLS draft over the years. These include:
