The Arlington Million is a Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race that takes place annually at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois. This prestigious event attracts some of the world's best horses and jockeys, all vying for a share of the $1 million purse.

First run in 1981, the Arlington Million quickly established itself as one of the premier turf races in North America, attracting international entries and becoming a key part of the summer racing calendar. The 1¼ mile race is open to horses aged three years and older, and often serves as a steppingstone towards the Breeders' Cup Turf in November.

The Arlington Million has produced some of the most memorable moments in American horse racing history. One such moment came in 1983 when Estrapade became the first feminist bred horse to win a Grade 1 stakes race, with a maiden win over Secretariat's Kentucky Derby-winning stablemate Sham.

In 2002, the Arlington Million was run on an emotional note as it marked the 9/11 attacks with both riders and trainers wearing commemorative black armbands. On this day, the European-raised Beat Hollow crossed the finish line first, taking the title.

Over the years, the Arlington Million has consistently lived up to its billing as a top-class race on the international stage, attracting major players from Europe and beyond. The race has seen multiple winners including trainer Aidan O'Brien, who has won the race an impressive four times, with Powerscourt, Dylan Thomas, Cape Blanco and most recently Bricks and Mortar in 2019.

Many of the runners in the Arlington Million have gone on to legendary careers, with horses like John Henry, Cigar, and Gio Ponti all making their marks in the racing world after triumphing in this race. In recent years, the race has also served as a breeding ground for talented new colts and fillies, such as Channel Cat and Postulation.

The Arlington Million is more than just a horse race, it's an event that serves to celebrate the sport of racing and the incredible animals that participate in it. With its rich history, top-class competition, and scenic setting, this race remains one of the most prestigious and exciting events on the American horse racing calendar.
