The California Institute of the Arts, or CalArts for short, is a prestigious institution known for its avant-garde approach to education in the arts. It is unsurprising then, that the institution’s annual music festival, Soundstream, is a celebration of musical experimentation and innovation. This year’s edition of Soundstream was held from April 18-21, 2018 and featured a lineup of pioneering artists whose work spans a range of genres and mediums. The four-day festival included a number of performances and concerts that showcased the diverse talents of the participating musicians. Organized by the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts, which is known for its eclectic and experimental curriculum, Soundstream 2018 aimed to highlight the unique approaches to composition and sound design that its students and faculty employ. One noteworthy concert during the festival was “Voices from Beyond,” which featured performances by four composers who had collaborated with the late Icelandic singer Björk. These artists, including Arca and Jesse Kanda, discussed their creative process and showcased their music through immersive performances. Another standout event was “Human Machines,” which focused on the intersection of technology and music. The concert included performances by international artists such as Holly Herndon, Matmos, and Myriam Bleau, each of whom explored different aspects of this theme through their work. A third night of Soundstream 2018 was titled “Ritual Groove,” featuring performances by artists who integrate spirituality and ritual into their music. Musicians performing that night included Yasmine Hamdan, Hieroglyphic Being, and Shabaka Hutchings. Each concert at Soundstream offered something different, but all shared a common thread in showcasing new and innovative approaches to music-making. The festival provided an opportunity for CalArts students and outside audiences alike to experience these diverse approaches firsthand. In addition to the concerts, Soundstream 2018 also included a number of workshops and masterclasses led by notable artists such as composer/performer Pamela Z and sound designer Erik Spiekermann. These sessions offered attendees an opportunity to learn from some of the most inventive artists working in music today. In conclusion, Soundstream 2018 was a resounding success. The festival showcased the impressive range of talent at CalArts and celebrated the institution’s commitment to nurturing artistic experimentation. Each concert provided a unique and engaging experience for audiences and highlighted the creative potential of music in the modern era.
