The Cleveland Barons were a professional ice hockey team that played in the American Hockey League (AHL) from 1937 to 1973. The team was based in Cleveland, Ohio, and played its home games at the Cleveland Arena.

The history of the Cleveland Barons dates back to 1929, when the Syracuse Stars of the IHL moved to Cleveland and became the Cleveland Indians. The Indians played in the IHL until 1937, when they joined the AHL as the Cleveland Barons. Over the next three decades, the Barons became one of the most successful and popular teams in the AHL, winning nine Calder Cup championships (the equivalent of the AHL's championship) and sending many players to the NHL.

One of the reasons for the success of the Cleveland Barons was their close relationship with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings owned the Barons from 1956 to 1972, and many of their top prospects and young players played for the Barons before moving up to the NHL. Some of the notable players who played for the Cleveland Barons include Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Marcel Dionne, Jimmy Rutherford, and Ted Lindsay.

However, like many other minor league hockey teams, the Cleveland Barons struggled financially in the 1970s. In addition to financial difficulties, the team also faced competition from the newly formed World Hockey Association (WHA), which offered higher salaries and more opportunities for players. As a result, the Barons ceased operations after the 1972-73 season, and the AHL did not return to Cleveland until 2001, when the Lake Erie Monsters (now known as the Cleveland Monsters) began play.

Despite their relatively short existence, the Cleveland Barons left a lasting legacy in the world of minor league hockey. They were one of the most successful and respected teams in the AHL, and their close relationship with the Detroit Red Wings helped to develop many future NHL stars. The Barons also played a key role in the development of hockey in Ohio and helped to pave the way for the return of professional hockey to Cleveland more than 25 years later.
