DePaul University's Blue Demons basketball team may not currently be the powerhouse it once was, but it still holds great significance in the world of college basketball. Dating back to 1923, DePaul has a long and storied history in the sport, including multiple conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances.

One of the most notable eras in DePaul basketball occurred during the 1970s and 80s under legendary coach Ray Meyer. During this time, DePaul consistently ranked among the top teams in the country and produced numerous NBA players, such as Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and Rod Strickland.

Although the program has struggled in recent years, DePaul has continued to produce talented players and coaches who have made an impact on college basketball. The most recent example is Dave Leitao, who coached the Blue Demons from 2002-2005 and then returned in 2015. Under his guidance, DePaul has seen improvement in its win-loss record and has recruited nationally-ranked prospects, such as Max Strus and Paul Reed.

In addition to producing basketball talent, DePaul also holds significance for its contributions to college basketball culture. The university's iconic Alumni Hall served as a host site for the 1956 and 1960 Final Fours and is regarded as one of the most historic basketball venues in the country.

Furthermore, DePaul has been a pioneer in integrating African American players into college basketball. In 1944, the Blue Demons became the first non-segregated team to play in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and in 1969, DePaul's Terry Rand became the first black player to start for a major college basketball program in the state of Illinois.

Despite its recent struggles, DePaul's history and contributions to college basketball should not be overlooked. As the program looks to regain its footing and return to its former glory, it remains an important part of the college basketball landscape and a source of inspiration for future generations of players and coaches.
