Frances Langford was an American singer and actress, known for her glamorous stage presence and beautiful singing voice. She became one of the most popular concert performers of her time, appearing in venues across America and around the world. Langford was born in Lakeland, Florida in 1913. She began singing as a child, and by her teenage years, she was performing in local clubs and on radio broadcasts. In 1935, she signed with NBC radio, eventually becoming one of the network's biggest stars. Her appearances on "The Rudy Vallee Show" and "Your Hit Parade" brought her into the homes of millions of Americans every week. As her popularity grew, Langford began making guest appearances in Hollywood films, such as "Every Night at Eight" (1935) and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942). She also starred in her own musical comedy series, "The Frances Langford-Don Ameche Show," which was broadcast on NBC in the early 40s. But it was in live concerts where Langford really shone. Whether performing in front of thousands in theaters and nightclubs or singing for troops overseas during the Second World War, she won over audiences with her warm personality and stunning vocal talent. Her shows often featured a mix of popular songs from the day, as well as classic standards and ballads. One of Langford's most famous performances took place in 1939, when she sang the iconic song "I'm in the Mood for Love" on the NBC radio program "The Chase and Sanborn Hour." The performance was so beloved that it became part of Langford's regular repertoire and is still remembered today as one of her signature tunes. Despite her success as a concert performer, Langford never forgot her roots in radio. Throughout her career, she continued to appear on various programs, and even hosted her own radio show, "The Frances Langford Show," in the late 40s. In addition to her musical career, Langford was also a noted philanthropist. She donated millions of dollars to charity over the years, including funds to support veterans' causes and medical research. Frances Langford passed away in 2005 at the age of 92. But her legacy lives on in the hearts of her fans and in the many recordings and performances she left behind. From Hollywood to Broadway to overseas military bases, Langford's voice brought joy and entertainment to generations of Americans.
