Parker started his career in the music business as a promoter and talent booker in the 1970s. He was one of the key figures behind the creation of the US Festival, which took place in San Bernardino, California in 1982. Parker's love for live music extended beyond his business interests. He was an avid musician himself and played guitar in several bands over the years. He even formed a band with his son called The Jim Parker Project.
