John R. Lewis Biography

Lewis, born on February 21, 1940, was an American politician and civil rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his passing in 2020. Lewis was a prominent figure in the American civil rights movement and played a key role in many significant events, including the March on Washington in 1963.
Early Life and Activism
Lewis was one of the "Big Six" leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. He was a key figure in many other civil rights activities and led the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, on March 7, 1965 – a day that became known as "Bloody Sunday."
Political Career
In 1986, John R. Lewis was elected to Congress and became known as the "Conscience of Congress" for his principled stands on many issues. He received numerous awards for his dedication to civil rights and social justice throughout his career.
