Kay Kyser was a renowned bandleader and radio personality during the swing era of music, known for his unique brand of entertaining concerts. Born James Kern Kyser in 1905, he grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and began playing the saxophone while attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He formed his first band, the Kollege Kampus Klub Orchestra, in 1927 and started performing at college dances and fraternity parties.

Kyser's big break came when he signed a contract with the Brunswick Record Company in 1934 and began recording hit songs such as "Can't Get Mississippi off My Mind" and "Three Little Fishes." He soon became a popular bandleader and radio personality, hosting his own weekly radio show, "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge," where he would interact with listeners and ask trivia questions about music.

In addition to his radio show, Kyser was also known for his energetic and entertaining live performances. He toured extensively throughout the United States, playing concerts at venues ranging from ballrooms to theaters to outdoor stadiums. His shows featured a mix of swing music, comedy routines, and audience participation segments that often involved his signature catchphrase, "That's right – you're wrong!"

One of Kyser's most famous concert events was the annual "Kollege of Musical Knowledge" tour, which he launched in 1939. The tour consisted of a two-hour variety show featuring musical acts, comedy skits, and contests that tested the audience's knowledge of music trivia. The tour was hugely successful, attracting thousands of fans and earning Kyser the nickname "The Ol' Perfessor."

Kyser's concerts were known for their fun and lighthearted atmosphere, and he made an effort to connect with his fans both on and off stage. He would often sign autographs and mingle with concertgoers after the shows, building a strong sense of community and loyalty among his fanbase.

Despite his success as a bandleader and entertainer, Kyser retired from performing in the late 1940s to focus on his family and other business ventures. He continued to work in the music industry, however, serving as a producer for television shows and movies such as "That's Entertainment!" and "Rhapsody in Blue."

Kay Kyser passed away in 1985 at the age of 80, but his legacy as a beloved bandleader and entertainer lives on. His concerts were a unique blend of music, comedy, and audience engagement that helped define the swing era and continue to inspire performers today.
