Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China, had a complex relationship with concerts. On one hand, Mao recognized the power of music to inspire and mobilize the masses. On the other hand, he was suspicious of individualism and bourgeois decadence, both of which he believed were embodied in certain types of music.

During the early years of Mao's rule, concerts played an important role in spreading revolutionary ideas and motivating the masses.
