Miami Hurricanes Basketball is a program that has experienced plenty of ups and downs in its history. However, the Hurricanes have managed to become a competitive force in college basketball in recent years.

The University of Miami first fielded a basketball team in 1926. Although they enjoyed some success early on, the program struggled for decades until head coach Leonard Hamilton arrived in 1990. Hamilton built a solid foundation during his five-year tenure, leading the Hurricanes to the NCAA Tournament twice.

Unfortunately, things fell apart for the program after Hamilton’s departure. The Hurricanes missed out on tournament action for over a decade until Jim Larranaga was hired in 2011. Larranaga quickly turned things around, leading the Hurricanes to a conference championship and an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen in his first season.

Since then, Miami has been a consistent performer in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). They have competed against traditional powerhouses such as Duke, North Carolina, and Louisville, and have given these teams all they can handle. For instance, in 2018, the Hurricanes pulled off a stunning upset over second-ranked Virginia in one of the biggest games of the season.

In recent years, Miami has sent several players to the NBA, including Shane Larkin, Bruce Brown, and Lonnie Walker IV. These players have helped bolster Miami’s reputation as a program that produces pro-level talent.

One reason for Miami’s success has been Larranaga’s ability to recruit top-notch players. In particular, he has done well to attract players from overseas, including Slovenian guard Davon Reed and Australian forward Dewan Huell. Larranaga has also shown a willingness to develop unheralded recruits, such as Ja’Quan Newton and Dejan Vasiljevic.

Despite being a relatively small program compared to others in the ACC, the Miami Hurricanes have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with. They play a tough brand of basketball and have shown a resiliency that has endeared them to fans across the country. As Miami continues to compete at a high level in the ACC, the Hurricanes are sure to remain a fixture in college basketball for years to come.
