Strikeforce: The Rise and Fall of a Major MMA Promotion

Strikeforce was a California-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion that operated from 1985 to 2013. At its peak, Strikeforce was considered the second biggest MMA organization in the world behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), featuring notable fighters such as Nick Diaz, Fabricio Werdum, Ronda Rousey, and Daniel Cormier.

The early days of Strikeforce were marked by a focus on kickboxing and boxing events, but it wasn't until the promotion began producing MMA shows in 2006 that it gained widespread recognition. Strikeforce initially focused on regional promotions in California before expanding to other states and eventually into Canada and Japan.

Strikeforce's popularity continued to grow with the acquisition of top fighters and the hosting of memorable events like Fedor Emelianenko vs Brett Rogers, a highly anticipated fight that drew over 500,000 viewers. In 2011, Strikeforce signed a broadcast deal with premium cable network Showtime that aimed to rival the UFC's deal with Fox Sports.

However, the downfall of Strikeforce would soon follow. The promotion struggled with injuries, failed weight cuts, and inconsistent schedules that hurt its ability to build momentum. Additionally, key players like Rousey and Cormier signed with the UFC, taking away some of Strikeforce's most popular attractions.

In August 2012, the UFC's parent company Zuffa announced plans to dissolve Strikeforce, and the promotion held its last event in January 2013. Many of Strikeforce's fighters were absorbed into the UFC roster once the promotion folded, but some chose to retire or continue their career elsewhere.

The legacy of Strikeforce lives on through exhibitions of athleticism, sportsmanship, and respect for the sport of MMA. Although it didn't become the giant that some hoped it would be, Strikeforce had a significant impact on the MMA world and provided some iconic moments that fans will always remember.
