Todd Rundgren may be best known as a singer-songwriter and producer, but he’s no stranger to theater. In fact, he spent much of the 1970s exploring the intersection between music and performance with his band Utopia. Drawing inspiration from everything from sci-fi novels to classical music, Utopia blurred the lines between rock concerts, musical theater, and avant-garde performance.

One of the most notable examples of Utopia’s theatricality was their 1977 album, “Ra.” Inspired by Egyptian mythology and space travel, the album tells the story of a pharaoh who journeys through the afterlife. To bring the concept to life, Rundgren and his bandmates staged elaborate multimedia performances that incorporated costumes, props, and projected visuals. The shows were more than just concerts – they were immersive experiences that took audiences on a journey through music, imagery, and storytelling.

Utopia’s theatrical pursuits weren’t limited to just one album, though. Their live shows often included elaborate set pieces and choreography, blurring the lines between rock and roll and performance art. For example, their 1975 tour included a segment where the band members strapped themselves into large, spinning wheels and played their instruments while being lifted into the air. It was risky, visually stunning, and showed that Utopia was willing to push boundaries and take risks in pursuit of something truly unique.

Even when Utopia wasn’t explicitly creating works for the theater, their music often had a narrative quality that lent itself to visual interpretations. Tracks like “The Seven Rays” and “Singring and the Glass Guitar” can easily inspire fantastical imagery, while songs like “Love is the Answer” and “Communion with the Sun” have a spiritual and meditative quality that lends itself to more abstract interpretations.

For Rundgren and Utopia, music was always about more than just entertainment. It was a vehicle for exploration, self-expression, and – perhaps most importantly – collaboration. By blending elements of rock, pop, classical music, theater, and visual art, they created a unique universe that was far greater than the sum of its parts. And though Utopia may no longer be active, their legacy as innovators in both music and theater lives on.
