VfL Wolfsburg is not a name that stands out in the rich history of European soccer or even German football. However, the club's rise to prominence in recent years, which includes their first-time participation in the Champions League and winning the Bundesliga title in 2009, has become a source of excitement and motivation for soccer enthusiasts worldwide.

Founded in 1945, VfL Wolfsburg started as an affiliate club of Volkswagen, one of Germany's largest car manufacturers. Despite a mediocre start, the club went on to make headlines in 2009-10 season when it won the Bundesliga title, defeating perennial champions Bayern Munich. In doing so, Wolfsburg became only the fifth team outside of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Hamburger SV to win the league in the post-war era. The victory served as a fitting tribute to Edin Dzeko, Grafite, Zvjezdan Misimovic, and Josué, who had formed a formidable attacking quartet and had carried the club to its greatest achievement.

Nevertheless, things didn't work out so well for VfL Wolfsburg following their historic league-winning campaign in 2009. They struggled to maintain their success in subsequent seasons and had numerous managerial changes. Although they qualified for the Champions League in 2016/17, they failed to advance beyond the group phase and were relegated from the German top flight two years later. But recently, the club hired a new head coach, Oliver Glasner, for the 2019/20 season, and his impact was immediate, leading the team to 7th place finish in his debut season.

The beginning of the current 2020/21 campaign saw VfL Wolfsburg getting off to a promising start, unbeaten in the first nine matches before losing to Bayern Munich. Their star player Wout Weghorst's form has characterized much of the success this season, with the Dutch leading the line to great effect. His performances have been complemented by those of Admir Mehmedi and Xaver Schlager, who have also performed admirably so far.

Despite playing in a league that boasts several world-class teams such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg's solid start this season suggests they could challenge for European qualification once again. The club is currently 6th in the Bundesliga table, just two points off fourth place – the Champions League playoff spot.

Unlike those other clubs mentioned above, VfL Wolfsburg isn't among Europe's elite, but their potential to cause surprise in the continent's most prestigious competition makes them ones to watch going forward. There's no denying that Wolfsburg has had its ups and downs within the last decade, but with a new coach, and a team full of talented individuals, it appears that there is finally something cooking at Volkswagen Arena. It remains to be seen if they can rekindle some of the magic from the 2009 campaign or go a step further by making a deep run in Europe, but one cannot help but keep an eye out for the side affectionately known as "The Wolves."
